Find the trainer and skill requirement before buying a leveling basket. Character level, profession skill, Knowledge and recipe access measure different things.
Midnight trainer directory
These trainers are in the Midnight version of Silvermoon City. Ask a city guard for the relevant profession marker. The linked profession guides contain the leveling route and material list. Older Silvermoon coordinates from Burning Crusade guides refer to a different version of the city.

Training and specialization requirements
Midnight crafting proficiency is listed at character level 80. Fishing is an exception: it can be trained at level 78. Learn the base profession if the trainer requires it, then learn the Midnight expansion skill. You do not need to finish earlier expansion skill bars first. The normal cap is 100; Midnight Fishing reaches 300.
Primary professions open specializations at profession skill 25. Mining’s three trees become available at skill 25, 50 and 75. A tree unlock is permission to spend Knowledge, not free points and not an automatic recipe unlock. Cooking and Fishing do not use the primary-profession Knowledge trees.

|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | Start / 75 | 5 | No character-level requirement |
| Journeyman | 50 / 150 | 10 | No character-level requirement |
| Expert | 125 / 225 | 20 | 10 |
| Artisan | 200 / 300 | 35 | 25 |

Recipe unlocks to check before buying materials
The trainer does not teach every recipe. A specialization recipe, research result, reputation purchase and boss drop have different prerequisites. The examples below cover the leveling bottlenecks and common next steps; each profession’s full recipe reference is linked for other items.
| Profession / target | Unlock route | Requirement or practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Alchemy: Light’s Potential | Camberon’s Cauldron, Silvermoon | Complete the five-healing-potion activity, then research with 5 Stabilized Derivate and 50 Alchemist’s Moxie. |
| Alchemy: Haranir Phial of Perception | Naynar, Harandar | Hara’ti Renown 5; purchase the recipe, not the finished phial. |
| Blacksmithing: Sun-Blessed tools | Craftsmithing → Trade Tools | Learn the matching tool recipe through the specialization before buying its alloy basket. |
| Blacksmithing: plate armor | Armorsmithing | Follow the branch and slot for the requested piece; unlocking another slot does not teach it. |
| Enchanting: Worldsoul Aegis | Trainer | Midnight Enchanting 55. |
| Enchanting: Runed Dazzling Thorium Rod | Lyna, Silvermoon | Vendor recipe. The rare rod instead comes from Transitories, Tonics, and Tools. |
| Engineering: recycled discoveries | Recycling | Spend 10 Knowledge in Recycling first; repeat eligible five-item recycling attempts. Discovery is random. |
| Engineering: Turbo-Junker’s Multitool | Market Mobility → Engineering Tools | Unlock the tool recipe before using it as a late leveling route. |
| Inscription: Thalassian Treatises | Calm Hands and crafting Treatises | Learn the initial Treatise through the tree; other profession versions are discoveries from crafting Treatises. |
| Inscription: faction Contracts | The corresponding faction vendor | Renown 5 for the original four factions. A contract is not automatically learned by unlocking its skill branch. |
| Jewelcrafting: Prismatic Focusing Iris | Lothraxion, Nexus-Point Xenas | Recipe drop; a tradable design may be available on the Auction House. Confirm learnability before buying. |
| Jewelcrafting: Loa Worshiper’s Band / Signet of Azerothian Blessings | Magovu / Naynar | Amani Tribe / Hara’ti Renown 5 respectively. |
| Leatherworking: Blessed Pango Charm | Flawless Fortes → Commanding Commodities → Overwhelming Optionals | Unlock the optional-reagent branch before committing to the Charm leveling basket. |
| Leatherworking: Forest Hunter’s Armor Kit / Blood Knight’s Armor Kit | Magovu / Caeris Fairdawn | Amani Tribe / Silvermoon Court Renown 5 respectively. |
| Tailoring: Sunfire Silk Lining | Heavy Trunks in Delves | Recipe drop; check the Auction House for a tradable pattern. |
| Tailoring: Arcanoweave Spellthread | Caeris Fairdawn | Silvermoon Court Renown 5. |
| Cooking: Hearty Food | Sylann | Cooking 35. Each conversion consumes five eligible meals; it is separate from learning the original meal recipe. |
| Skinning: Majestic lures | Talented Tracker | Eversong on learning the tree; Zul’Aman at 10, Harandar at 20, Voidstorm at 30, Grand Beast at 40 Knowledge in that node. |
How to diagnose a locked recipe
- Open the correct expansion’s profession journal and show unlearned recipes.
- Read the listed source and skill requirement. Check the exact item name; a recipe and its finished product are different purchases.
- Check faction Renown, the relevant profession’s Moxie balance, and any research activity separately.
- For a specialization recipe, follow the named branch until the recipe reward is actually unlocked.
- For random drops or discoveries, keep material purchases incremental. No fixed number of attempts guarantees the recipe.

Tools and accessories by slot and tier
Equip these in the profession journal, not a combat armor slot. Primary professions use one tool and two accessories; Cooking and Fishing have one accessory here. Item rarity (green, blue, purple) and crafted quality rank are separate. Compare the actual skill and secondary-stat values before replacing an item.
Rare and epic primary-profession gear provide the same skill bonus: +18 from the tool and +11 from each accessory, totaling +40. Epic pieces improve secondary stats. Green and rare crafted gear can be bought on the Auction House; epic pieces using bound Fused Vitality require self-crafting or an order with your bound materials. You do not need epic gear merely to reach the rare set’s skill bonus.

Choose secondary stats for the activity: stat priorities and effects. For example, milling and recycling cannot Multicraft, while eligible consumable crafts can. Check the item’s binding and required level in its tooltip before buying.
Infused nodes: effects and overloading
Herbalists use Overload Infused Herb; miners use Overload Infused Deposit. Learn the Midnight version by gathering an infused node. Older expansion overloads are separate spells. Put the correct one on your action bar, inspect the node’s prefix, and check that an overload charge is ready.
| Prefix / material | Normal gather | Overload and response |
|---|---|---|
| Lightfused / Mote of Light | Catch falling motes in ground circles; each catch damages you. | More lightfalls. Choose open, level ground and avoid chasing motes into enemies or off cliffs. |
| Wild / Mote of Wild Magic | Herbs spawn lashers; ore spawns orelings. Defeat and gather their bodies. | Defeat the summoned avatar for a five-minute Perception buff; the completed Wild branch extends it to ten. |
| Primal / Mote of Primal Energy | Gather motes; a deposit can root and damage you. | Channel health into motes. Movement interrupts the channel; start with enough health. |
| Voidbound / Mote of Pure Void | Escape the expanding void effect to avoid displacement. | A Reality Tear transports you elsewhere. The Voidbound branch enables the return ability; do not assume the destination contains a useful node. |
| Lush herbs / Rich ore / ordinary nodes | Gather normally; larger nodes improve base yield. | Not valid infused overload targets. |
| Transplanted herbs | Reduced-yield Voidstorm herbs, including Lush variants. | Cannot be overloaded. |
Overload charge planning
Gathering reduces the cooldown. The overload root’s 40-point capstone adds a second charge, letting one charge refill while another is ready. Invest in a matching infused branch when you regularly gather that type. Check Herbalism and Mining builds before diverting points from your main material route.
Coiled Isle exceptions
After a Curse Surge, Cursed Land and Waters enables special nodes in the affected area. Cursed nodes can be overloaded for additional Cursebound Globes. Envenomated nodes work differently: gather, wait for cleansing, then collect the green orbs for Neutralized Venom Clots. Nearby players can collect those orbs too. Envenomated nodes are not overload targets.

Crafting orders: requirements, rewards and costs
| Order type | Who can fill it? | Best use / requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Public | An eligible crafter who claims it | Convenient when any result is acceptable. Public orders do not let you demand a minimum crafted quality. |
| Personal | The named crafter | Agree the item, quality, materials, optional reagents and commission with that crafter first. |
| Guild | An eligible guild member | Share requests within your guild; specify the desired quality where supported. |
| Patron | You, for an NPC customer | Character-specific opportunities at the profession’s crafting station. Meet the listed recipe and quality requirement before the timer expires. |
Placing an order
- Use the crafting-order service and choose the exact recipe, not merely a similar item name.
- Supply required bound reagents yourself, such as Fused Vitality for epic profession gear. Choose optional reagents for the intended stats or item upgrade.
- Confirm who supplies every other material. Public orders can omit unbound reagents; their absence becomes a cost for the crafter.
- For a specific quality, arrange a personal order and confirm that the crafter’s preview meets it with your reagent choices.
- Review the commission and posting fee, submit, and collect the finished item through mail after completion.
Filling an order
You need the learned recipe, the required station and tools, sufficient reagents and a result meeting the requested quality. The order system does not bypass a recipe unlock. Inspect the supplied-material icons individually, then check the quality preview and any Concentration required. Choose the order deliberately; an available order can still cost more than its commission.
Patron rewards
Hover the reward chest before accepting. An order can award profession Knowledge, profession-specific Moxie, finishing reagents or reagent packages as well as gold. Not every order awards Knowledge. Catch-up orders can offer additional Knowledge when eligible; see the catch-up checklist. Enchanting uses disenchanting-based Knowledge progression rather than the normal Patron Knowledge loop.
Cost check with an example
Net material cost = missing reagents + consumables used − commission received. Suppose the NPC supplies most ingredients, but you must add 600 gold of materials and receive 100 gold: you spend 500 gold before valuing the extra reward. If it awards two Knowledge points, that is 250 gold per point. This is an illustration, not a live market quote. Value Concentration separately because spending it can prevent another craft.
Skip an unaffordable order or one whose required quality you cannot reach. Check again for new orders; the visible expiration timer applies to that specific order and is not a guarantee that every replacement has the same reward.

Racial profession bonuses
Retail / Midnight values. Skill bonuses can help reach a crafting threshold, but do not replace learned recipes or Knowledge. Rating and percentage bonuses are different units: Haranir’s 10 Finesse is not 10%.
| Race | Profession benefit |
|---|---|
| Blood Elf | +5 Enchanting skill |
| Dark Iron Dwarf | +5 Blacksmithing skill; +10% Blacksmithing crafting speed |
| Draenei | +5 Jewelcrafting skill |
| Gnome | +5 Engineering skill |
| Goblin | +5 Alchemy skill |
| Highmountain Tauren | +5 Mining skill; +25% Mining Deftness |
| Kul Tiran | +2 skill in primary professions |
| Lightforged Draenei | +5 Blacksmithing skill; summonable Forge of Light |
| Nightborne | +5 Inscription skill |
| Pandaren | +5 Cooking skill |
| Tauren | +5 Herbalism skill; +25% Herbalism Deftness |
| Worgen | +5 Skinning skill; +25% Skinning Deftness |
| Haranir | +5 Herbalism skill; +10 Finesse rating |
| Dracthyr | +2% Perception |
| Earthen | +2% Finesse |
For a new gathering character, compare yield, rare-material and speed benefits against the activity you plan to do. For a crafter, check whether the extra skill changes the actual recipe preview before assigning value to it. A racial bonus does not guarantee profitability or maximum quality.
Classic values are different
Classic Era’s profession racials are Gnome +15 Engineering and Tauren +15 Herbalism. Later Classic expansions add races and bonuses; do not apply this Retail table to those realms. Follow the game-version selector and the expansion-specific guide.
