Disenchant rare Cataclysm equipment with item level 318 or higher. Expansion matters where equipment level ranges overlap. Dust is more likely from armor; essences are more likely from weapons. Check your Enchanting skill before buying equipment in TBC and later rulesets.

For original WoW, Outland and Northrend, the ranges above refer to the equipment’s required character level. Cataclysm’s 272+ ranges refer to item level. These are different numbers: read the item tooltip and match its expansion before buying a batch to disenchant.
