How to farm Copper Ore
Mine deposits with Mining. Carry a Mining Pick and use Find Minerals.
Classic Era, TBC and Wrath use the original Azeroth terrain. Cataclysm and Mists use the reworked world, so use a route for your realm’s terrain.
See Mining leveling for progression and related materials.

Keep ore or smelt bars? Choose by profession and ruleset
| Ruleset | Who uses it | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Original WoW / Classic Era | Mining smelts ore; Blacksmithing and Engineering consume Copper Bars in early recipes. | Smelt the bars your chosen recipe needs. Jewelcrafting is not available in Era. |
| The Burning Crusade and later Classic expansions | The same uses, plus Jewelcrafting recipes and prospecting. | Keep raw ore if you plan to prospect it; smelting it into bars removes that option. Prospecting consumes five ore at a time and gives a random gem result. |
| Retail | Legacy profession recipes use Copper; it does not substitute for Midnight ore. | Match the recipe’s expansion and ingredient name before buying or smelting. |
Plan backwards from the recipe: reserve raw ore for prospecting, count the Copper Bars needed for crafts, then smelt only that remainder. Include bars used in intermediate parts such as Engineering bolts. A listed profession is a possible consumer, not a guarantee of demand or profit.

Skill and route planning
| Requirement | Recommended zone |
|---|---|
| Mining skill 1 | Elwynn Forest |
Copper Veins occur around hills and in mines. Circle the zone’s accessible slopes; enter caves only if you can handle the enemies.

Choose and adapt a Copper route
| Situation | Route decision |
|---|---|
| Alliance, original terrain | Use the Elwynn map below as a starting circuit. Follow accessible hillsides and check mine entrances. |
| Horde, Cataclysm or Mists terrain | Use the reworked Durotar map below. Do not follow an original-terrain line through changed geography. |
| A cave adds fighting or a long detour | Skip it and compare an outdoor loop. Pick the route you can repeat safely at your character level. |
| Several nodes are already mined | Keep moving through the circuit or change to another listed starting zone; map markers are search locations, not reserved deposits. |
Use each map’s Show route and markers checkbox to compare the overlay with the underlying terrain. The numbered text below the image repeats the landmarks. Track your own ore collected over a full circuit, including travel and combat, before deciding which route works best.
