Classic Lockpicking 1–300: Rogue Routes, Boxes & Skill Caps

Classic Era · Rogue Lockpicking 1–300
Checked 21 October 2026

Use this route for original level-60 Classic rules. Lockpicking is a Rogue ability with its own skill progression. Retail and later Classic expansions use different progression rules; select the matching version before following the route.

Check your character before traveling

At level 16, visit your Rogue trainer for the Lockpicking introduction and Thieves’ Tools. Keep the tools in your bags. Your skill ceiling is five times your character level, up to 300. A level-30 Rogue therefore cannot train past 150 yet, even at an appropriate chest. Training and skill-cap reference.

Character level Skill ceiling Planning checkpoint
16 80 Start the practice route; return after leveling.
20 100 Finish the first stage.
30 150 Ready to leave the early footlockers.
40 200 Finish Angor Fortress.
50 250 Finish the Slag Pit stage.
60 300 Reach the Classic cap.

The 1–300 route

Skill target Location and action Switch when…
1–100 Alliance: Practice Lockboxes at Alther’s Mill, north of Lake Everstill in Redridge. Horde: Buccaneer’s Strongboxes inside the ship near Ratchet. Your level permits 100 and you reach it. Avoid the separate Jewel of the Southsea chest if unprepared for its enemy spawn.
100–150 Waterlogged Footlockers on the landward shore of Zoram Strand, Ashenvale. You reach 150.
150–200 Angor Fortress, Badlands: upstairs Battered Footlockers first; downstairs Dented Footlockers from 175. You reach 200.
200–250 The Slag Pit, Searing Gorge: lower quarry first; upper barracks from 225. You reach 250. Pick pockets for additional boxes while moving between locks.
250–300 Blackrock Depths entrance locks, plus Heavy Junkboxes from suitable enemies. You reach the character-level ceiling or 300.

Route and chest-location maps.

Blackrock Depths: use the ability, not your key

From the entrance, open the left door, then the next right, then the next left. Continue to the wooden Shadowforge Lock beneath the large gear. Cast Pick Lock explicitly if you own the Shadowforge Key. Exit before resetting. Instance-entry limits restrict repeated runs, so bring boxes to open between runs.

Which pickpocketed box can you open?

Pick Pocket requires Stealth and supplies useful boxes while questing. These are minimum opening skills, not guaranteed skill-up ranges. Junkbox reference.

Junkbox Typical enemy level Minimum Lockpicking
Battered 20–30 1
Worn 30–40 70
Sturdy 40–50 175
Heavy 50–60 250

If your skill stops increasing

  • At your character ceiling: level the Rogue before spending more time on locks.
  • The lock is red: check its minimum requirement. Move back to the previous stage; downstairs and upstairs chests can differ despite being in one building.
  • The lock is grey: choose a higher stage. Successfully opening something is not the same as receiving a skill point.
  • You used a key: select Pick Lock from the spellbook or action bar before clicking the door.
  • No boxes available: switch between the outdoor route and stored junkboxes rather than repeatedly waiting at an empty spawn.
  • Enemy levels are too high: postpone that area or choose another source. A lock’s minimum skill does not mean the surrounding enemies are safe for your character.

Save your current stage, current skill and next character-level checkpoint together. That makes it easy to resume without repeating the travel or mistaking a level cap for a broken route.
