Farming Volatile Fire

Item Level: 83
Where to Farm: Mt. Hyjal or Twilight Highlands
Recommended Level: 80+

Volatile Farming is a great trade good to farm and sell on the auction house for gold. It sells for between 5 and 20 gold per volatile and sells in stacks of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and even 200! This is an extremely versatile trade material that sells well and very quickly to players who want to craft items. It’s used for a lot of different items in the game and is needed in almost every profession. It is one of the base materials in Cataclysm.

There are two ways to farm Volatile Fire. You can use Fishing or you can kill mobs over and over. Anytime you can mix these farming methods while farming another material you will help avoid the monotony and avoid flooding the market with your gathered goods. This farming guide covers both fishing and traditional farming.

Update: You can make a lot of gold with Volatile Fire, but if you want to step it up and make thousands of gold you should read my personal favorite guide.

Where to Farm Volatile Fire

Farming Volatile Fire in Mt. Hyjal (Fishing)

Mt. Hyjal is the best place to farm Volatile Fire if you have Fishing. The area highlighted on the map below, around the Sulfuron Spire, is surrounded by lava. You can fish anywhere in this lava and receive a few Volatile Fire every now and then. It’s even better to find Pools of Fire (Fishing pools) and fish into them. They will give you a much better rate than otherwise. If you’re doing something else in real life, you may not want to pay attention to WoW, then just keep casting into the lava and ignore the pools and autoloot for an easy but slow rate of Volatile Fires. Otherwise, you can fly above the Spire and look for pools on your minimap (enable ‘Find Fish’ on your minimap) to do this. You can also kill the nearby fire elementals which drop Volatile Fire while waiting for pools to respawn.

Farming Volatile Fire in Twilight Highlands (Fishing)

The next best place to farm Volatile Fire with Fishing is in Twilight Highlands to the west of Crushblow. Here there are Pools of Fire that spawn in the lava and Enslaved Infernos that patrol around on the outside of the ring of lava. You can kill the infernos while you wait for the Pools of Fire to spawn or just continue casting into the lava.

Farming Volatile Fire in Mt. Hyjal (without Fishing)

The best place to farm Volatile Fire without fishing is in Mt. Hyjal, the Flame Ascendents east of the Sulfuron Spire spawn quickly and have a reasonable drop rate of Volatile Fire. If you bring a lot of AoE and some good gear you can farm a lot of fires here in a short amount of time.

Farming Volatile Fire in Twilight Highlands (without Fishing)

You can also farm Volatile Fire in Twilight Highlands without Fishing. There are Unbound Emberfiends that patrol around north west of Thundermar. These have a low drop rate of Volatile Fire but are the best available. If you farm for a long time you will have a consistent amount of Volatile Fires going into your inventory.

Tip: Have you ever wondered how players have so many level 85s or how they can level an 85 so quickly? I use and strongy recommend Zygor's in-game leveling addon which will enable you to level in 5 days of played time. You can find a free version of it here.

    • ^ Sorry for double post. My HTML code didn’t do what I wanted above. Before the first word in the links should have been what it says when you hover over it.
ex: “..but I did try Enslaved Infernos and…”

(Forgot the or something like that.)

  1. Hello, what level fishing is needed in Mount Hyjal? :)

    • You can fish anywhere at any level, it depends what you want to catch though. I would recommend at least 450 before you start farming Volatile Fire though.
