Ancient Lichen is one of those herbs I wonder why anyone wants. It’s not worth much on the auction house, about 1-2 gold on most realms. It’s not needed to level Alchemy. It might be cheap enough to use for milling, but there are much better herbs to farm if you need herbs for milling. It is used to craft level 70 elixirs, which have no use anymore. Even if the price is high on your realm I wouldn’t recommend farming ti since the demand just isn’t going to be there (comment if I’m wrong).
To farm it, you’ll need level level 340 herbalism to gather it and level 70 (at least) to kill whatever is in your way. If you’re level 85 or 90 you can roll right through the below zones and fill your 5 reset quota pretty fast. It’s found in the level 60-70 instances, which means you will be limited to 5 per hour.
Update: You can make a lot of gold with Ancient Lichen, but if you want to step it up and make thousands of gold you should read my personal favorite guide.
Where to Farm Ancient Lichen
Farming Ancient Lichen in Mana Tombs
If you’re level 75 or higher you should go to Mana Tombs, run through it and gather all the Ancient Lichen you can find, exit, reset and repeat 5 times. Doing this you will probably find a stack or two each run. There is no route needed, just spawn points:
Farming Ancient Lichen in Slave Pens
The best place to farm Ancient Lichen back during The Burning Crusades was in Slave Pens. As a Rogue or a Druid you could stealth through to a few key locations, grab the Lichen and get out. You could make several hundred gold an hour doing this, which was a lot back then. Now you can just roll through The Slave Pens on a level 80+, kick ass, take names and gather the Lichen.
As a final note, it used to be fun to visit the Skettis and farm Ancient Lichen and other herbs. Here you would find Talonsworn Forest-Rager (giant trees) on a set spawn time who would let you gather them after they die. This might be an option for those of you who aren’t exactly on Cataclysm realms. You need level 360 to gather the corpses of Forest Ragers.
